Week 5: From "Sado" to Market Competition

This week’s class was fun but still full of useful learning. One of the main topics we discussed was CIPUPM progress, especially about the competitive market.

We started with a simple but interesting question which is why does “kedai abang sado” have more customers compared to others? At first, everyone was laughing and curious. I even just found out that “sado” means “besar bodo” 😂 (thanks to Airil for the explanation in class!). Even though it sounds funny, it actually led to a serious discussion about business.

We learned that it is not always about the product being cheap or tasty. Sometimes, customers are attracted because of branding, image, and how unique a shop looks. The “abang sado” example shows that customer attention can come from how a business presents itself, not just what it sells.

Besides that, we also learned about the Osaka Case Study. It teaches us how to analyse a case using FILA  which stands for Facts, Ideas, Learning Issues, Action Plan).

Facts: what really happened

Ideas: possible thoughts or explanations

Learning Issues: what we still need to learn

Action Plan: what we should do next

At first, it looks complicated, but once we understand it, FILA is actually very helpful. It helps us think in a clear and structured way when solving problems. Overall, this week's class was very interesting.

Stay tuned for the next blog :))

Week 4: DOI -Rogers, 2003

Wednesday, 15 April 2026

Today in Dr. Fareed’s FSM4505 class, I learned about how innovations and technologies develop within society. Some of the topics discussed were Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), the Bandwagon Effect, and the Leapfrogging Effect. Even though these terms sound a bit complicated, the concepts are actually very close to our everyday lives.

First, Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) is about how a new idea or technology spreads and is accepted by people. For example, the use of online food delivery apps, at first, maybe only a small group of people used them, but over time more people started using them because they saw how convenient it was. In DOI, there are also categories of users such as innovators, early adopters, and so on. From this, we can understand why some people are quick to try new things, while others prefer to wait and see before following.

Next, the Bandwagon Effect refers to a situation where someone does something because many others are doing the same thing. Simply put, it’s “following the trend” or, in Gen Z terms, “FOMO.” For example, when a certain food goes viral on TikTok, suddenly everyone wants to try it even if they had never thought about it before. In the food industry, this effect is very strong because demand can increase rapidly due to social influence.

Lastly, the Leapfrogging Effect is quite interesting because it shows how a place or organization can skip a stage of technology and move straight to a more advanced one. For example, some small businesses that never used complex manual systems can jump directly to digital systems like online ordering or cashless payments. This can actually save time and costs in the long run.

Overall, today’s class helped me better understand how technological changes and trends can influence the way people think and act, especially in the food and service industry. I didn’t expect that something we see as normal actually has theories behind it. I’m so amazed, guys!!

See you in another blog, byee :)) ✨

Welcome to my blog!

Hello welcome to my blog!

My name is Nur Diyana, a third-year student in Food Service and Management at the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM. This semester, I attended a digitalization class that was conducted online during the first week. However, my experience was a little different compared to my other classmates because I was unable to join the class at the beginning. This was because I was performing umrah, a truly meaningful opportunity in my life.

Even though I couldn’t attend the class at first due to certain circumstances, I felt very grateful to have a lecturer who is understanding of students’ situations. The assignments given had a flexible and longer duration, so I was still able to catch up and complete them after I returned. One of the tasks assigned was to form groups and conduct consultation sessions with small businesses. We are required to help them in terms of digitalization, especially in developing websites for their businesses. This task is very interesting because it not only allows us to learn theory but also apply our knowledge practically in the real world.

Overall, even though I missed the class at the initial stage, this experience still gave me many benefits. I also feel excited and can’t wait to carry out the next tasks with my group and learn more about digitalization.

Don’t forget to like and stay tuned for my next blog :)) ✨

F2F Digitalization Class

My name is Diyana. I am a Year 3 student at the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM. As soon as I entered the third week of Semester 6, my feelings were all mixed up including excited, nervous, and a little curious about what I was going to learn. Especially since this was my first time attending a digital class with Dr. Fareed. It really felt like a “new chapter unlocked”!

Honestly, at first it felt a bit awkward. Imagine being used to a more relaxed learning style, and suddenly having to adapt to a digital class environment that is more interactive and technology-driven. But what’s interesting is that from there, I started to realize that learning doesn’t have to be boring, it can actually be more engaging when we explore new things.

The best part was when we were introduced to the world of blogging. At first, I wondered, “Can I really do this?” But then I thought about it, blogging is like a personal diary where I can look back one day and remember that I was once a student in this field. Not only that, it helps us express ideas while also improving creativity and the way we communicate in a more interesting way.

Dr. Fareed is also very supportive and gives us the freedom to explore in our own way. That’s what made me feel more confident to try, even though I’m still a beginner. Slowly but surely, the excitement started to replace the nervousness I felt at the beginning.

In conclusion, this first week truly opened my eyes to the fact that learning can be fun and meaningful, especially when we dare to step out of our comfort zone.
